  • Pro costs $19.99 a month billed yearly ($239.88). It adds better accuracy, speaker names and saved history.

Why it's worth it

Pocket is a phone-mounted recorder for people who live on calls. Its free plan has no monthly cap on standard transcripts, which most rivals do not offer. The catch is the hardware: reviewers found a button that misses presses and a hard-to-read LED. If you only record now and then, a cheaper alternative is the free recorder on your phone: Voice Memos with Apple Intelligence on iPhone or Google Recorder on Pixel.

The review

Pocket is a business-card-sized recorder that snaps onto the back of your phone and sends what it hears to an app that writes transcripts, summaries and action items. We haven't tested it ourselves. This page draws on Pocket's own site (opens in a new tab), WIRED's notetaker guide (opens in a new tab) by Chris Null, a hands-on review (opens in a new tab) by Jake MacAndrew at ChannelLife Canada, and a researched review (opens in a new tab) by David Wilson at Testbench Lab.

What it does well

The free plan is the main reason to look at Pocket. Pocket says standard transcription is unlimited, while Chris Null notes that most notetakers stop at about 300 free minutes a month. A contact mic picks up phone calls through the back of the phone, so you don't need speakerphone. Chris Null called the transcripts and summaries very good and easy to understand, and found they arrived in a bit more than half the time a rival took. Jake MacAndrew found transcription strong in quiet rooms and accurate on ordinary mobile calls.

Where it falls short

  • Chris Null found the single button sometimes didn't register or registered twice, leaving several two-second recordings behind.
  • The LED is small and hard to see, so it is easy to miss whether you are recording.
  • Every Word export Chris Null made came out corrupted.
  • Jake MacAndrew saw speakers mixed up when people talked over each other.
  • Pocket claims 4 days of active use. Jake MacAndrew got a few hours a day for several days, and nobody has timed it.

How it compares

Most card-style rivals cap free transcription at around 300 minutes a month, so Pocket costs less to run if you record a lot. WIRED ranked it runner-up, behind the Comu Action Pro, which has a screen. If you record now and then, your phone may be enough: Voice Memos with Apple Intelligence on iPhone and Google Recorder on Pixel both transcribe and summarize for free, though they can't record a normal phone call the way Pocket's contact mic can.

Should you get it?

Yes, if you spend hours a day on calls and in small meetings and want searchable notes without a monthly fee. Skip it if you mostly need Zoom or Teams notes, you record in noisy rooms, or you only record a few times a month, where a free phone app does the job. Pocket costs $129 at heypocket.com, down from a listed $199, as of November 1, 2026.
